It just goes from bad to worse....

I've said my goodbyes to my characters, just in case they go poofity on 6 June.

I would have done that ages ago, especially if I was perma-stuck on an older title game. We've always heard that the code for EQ2 is kinda whacky, plus the engine they used wasn't the greatest. It just doesn't keep your resume or career viable in this day and age. Why hire some over priced "experienced" coder who has been stuck supporting an ancient title like EQ1 or EQ2, when you can hire someone younger and who will gladly work for cheap for a chance at getting in the door of a gaming company?

Agree. As for myself, and in addition to the reasons you mentioned and no matter how much I loved the eq franchise, I wouldn't want my name associated with the quality being produced and the business practices being used to sell it.

I would have bailed on dbg long ago.

I hope the worker bees do the right thing for themselves before Epstein does it for them.

Makes you wonder if Domino saw this coming and it was the real reason she bailed...

You can't tell me nobody on the inside saw the writing on the wall.

As bad as this at least appears to be, remember Domino literally couldn't get back into the US for a couple of months, and the political climate has only gotten worse since that occurred. She had a good reason to bail even before all of this happened.

Not to take this off into a tangent, but that's pretty true of the tech industry in general. They want younger workers that are cheaper and willing to work longer hours with no OT (salaried). I know - I'm the older, experienced variety and we are NOT valued.

But I totally agree with you in this case the writing has been on the wall a while. For all we know they have been trying to move on and just haven't been able to land a new job. As long as some of them have been there, I think they already would have that issue of somewhat pigeon-holing themselves working on a game with obsolete technology. How transferable are their skills? Maybe they are super talented and can pick up new stuff quickly, but that's hard to prove by a resume.

I wonder if they'll actually give anyone any kind of warning at all before they just pull the plug.

*shrugs* Never was playing a game when it died, so this will be interesting to watch and experience. Even if I do blame DBG for their fate.

I think it's super sad to see a game go even if the company isn't great. It affects a lot of players who love it both current and past. I was playing Vangaurd when it went away and many others have gone that I was not playing anymore but it still made me sad to see them go.

I'd be shocked if they get a warning. I was laid off once and we did get a 6 month warning they were filing for bankruptcy but that was mostly because the owner was a kind man and cared about the employees. I don't think anyone would describe Daybreak that way.

There will be no warning 'if' it happens. I don't think it will though, they've had time for the lawyers to work out 'divest' paperwork.

The date's been on the calendar since early April. At this point I just assume come zero hour the plug gets pulled. Who's going to want to bankroll this shambling pile?

I have - Matrix Online. It was far more emotional that I expected. Stayed online until the switch got flicked and the screens went black....

Yeah. It's not a matter of if or why, but how and when, and while it might not happen in June, I won't be too much longer after that.

With today's update, they lifted 24 person restrictions on Precipice of Power and Arena of the Gods.

That more than anything else lately is a red flag to me.

They've said for years now they would not do that; it was not worth the time investment; never ever; too much more important things to work on. People have asked and begged, and it's been a hard no all along. It was even said once upon a recent time that it was nowhere as simple as you would expect, so zero chance.

I don't buy for one damn second this was a "oh, this is for the PLAYERS!" *harpstrings of goodwill* move. Not a chance. And I don't believe either, "Well Caith was gone so we had some time to do some weird stuff laying around," either, cause it was said absolutely a no - this is not something that would have been just lying around.

This reeks of, "well, this is a lot of people's long term in-game-goals, might as well give them a chance while there's still time."

I think you might be a little paranoid there. XD

Sometimes you think something is hard and then you look at it again later and go "oh nm that's easy." Or sometimes you tell people something's hard because you don't wanna do it. :p And sometimes you think something's hard because someone else told you it was hard and you never bothered to look yourself.

I have gone through 3 shutdowns so far -
    1. Tabula Rasa (NCSoft) - I was cross about this one at the time as it was a fun game. I played it on the final day when it shutdown for good (Feb 28 2009)
    2. Star Wars Galaxies (SOE) - loved this game to death. I didn't just play it, I lived it both pre (Master Architect) and post NGE (Commando). Guild and game population were failing even before the shutdown announcement. I couldn't stand to log in on the last day (Dec 15, 2011) Vale :(
    3. Vanguard (SOE/DBG) - I wasn't surprised when they announced the shutdown as I had stopped playing the month earlier. My guild was down to a handful of people at the time and it was impossible to recruit new players. Very sad and it had a few unique bit of game play like diplomacy. I didn't login for its shutdown on July 31, 2014.
All of these games gave me a great deal of pleasure both in playing them and in meeting/interacting with a large number of people from all walks of life.

    City of Heroes.

I will never forgive NCSoft for that. And as much as I enjoyed GW2, I didn't even LOOK at the game until they ditched Nexan and returned most of the control of the game to Arena Net.

    (seriously. **** ncsoft. the end)

I have never played a game until the bitter end, no matter how much I may have enjoyed it. When I start to get major bad vibes and I can see the writing on the wall, I always move on in advance.

When it comes to EQ2, I used to think that it would really make me sad to ever see it end, but given the current state of the game, the attitudes of the people designing/managing it and the lack of appreciation for the players by DBG, I no longer feel that way. DBG did a good job of strangling those feelings out of me.

I bear no ill will towards the players of EQ2 past or present and wish every one of them the best. I will always have fond memories from the last 14 years and that is enough for me. I don't need to be there until they turn off the lights.
