When I played, I did sorcerer healer (I always have to be difficult). It wasn't optimal out of the box, but it was effective for solo and small group, and I could switch to daggers and whup some ass if I needed to.

That being said, when warden came out I swapped mains in a freaking heartbeat. That class was amazingly fun.

Edit: Bosmer sorcerer (and bosmer warden) because **** the Meta, that's why.

Hah, my main was a bosmer stamina sorc with a 2 hander. She was the bomb, opposite of meta but fun as hell and could solo pretty much anything. I also had a bosmer tank warden for duoing with my husband, and a dunmer dual-wielding dragonknight for when he wanted to tank.

Well in Skyrim it is left and right hand only for skills like magic or weapons and it is aim the cross hairs to target. Exception is shouts which are cone to your front facing for damage type ones. It is also action key based for some interactions like door, chest etc.

Elder Scrolls online is hot bar based for most abilities but also has action key/commands, tab targeting etc. Lots of mouse button action for different attacks, blocks and interrupts. Lots of keyboard work to roll/dodge if you want to do that but could just circle the mob as well. You can run and cast on some abilities depending on which one it is from your class, skill, weapon, guild. Tab targeting except for aoe type abilities, can swap weapons on the fly as you are allowed two. Best to hunt youtube for some play through.

I guess it is a hybrid of Elder Scroll and an MMO.

I tried (many years ago) a 2-week trial of WoW - hated the art. Never went back.

I tried ESO, but just can't get the hang of the movement and combat system - very frustrating having the mouse fixed to the centre of the screen. I also really don't like that I had to download a heap of 3rd party add-ons just for quality-of-life features like a mini-map.

Rift is ok - you get a daily shiny just for logging in. Being a shiny-addict, that's good enough for me! I agree that the character art leaves a lot to be desired, but for me, it's tolerable. I confess that I haven't actually played it for a while, though.

The anime character art of FFXIV is just awful, and those stupid flying escapees from an Asian cartoon that deliver the mail leave me absolutely cold, but the environment art is gorgeous, and the gameplay is ok (good for a soloer like me).

I pop in periodically to GW2 as I love the art and enjoy exploring, but it gets tedious quickly (can't just explore areas as your character auto-scales down, so you are constantly fighting off mobs even at very low level - sometimes I just want to roam around and see what's over the next hill without being bothered). I've always found both GW and GW2 very light and fluffy, no depth like there is with EQ2.

FFXIV is sort of like GW2 on steroids - more depth but not as much as EQ2 either.

My problem is that I play EQ2 with a friend, and he just won't go to anything else. GW2 - too light and fluffy. WoW - I can't stand it. Rift - he can't stand it. ESO - not good for either of us. FFXIV - he's tried it, doesn't like it, too much like GW2....he will have to suck it up at some point as EQ2 won't be around forever, and for the moment, I'm stuck there as well!!

I just think it's funny that he was in San Diego and didn't visit the "other gaming company" in town. :)

Sorry, if this wasn't clear. I was responding to the "LazyPeon talking about AOC" post.

This is basically what drove me out of ESO when OneTamriel hit. Some days I just want to potter and you can no longer just potter. And when I patched a couple of months back to try it again I discovered that they had reset all my skills AGAIN and I just couldn't be bothered to sort them all out for the umpteenth time :(.

True - Really, class and race optimization really only matters if you are a hard core pvp'r. You can get by just fine with whatever you like in all other content, including high end trials.

For the vet content, you can build it however you like, as long as you can perform your designated role without hurting the raid.

One other thing I recommend for new players of eso....

You're gonna be born in the newest expansion. If you want an easier time of it, hold off on that zone and head to the homeland faction for your race. That will open up 2 quest lines: The main quest line, and the quest line for your faction. Doing these first will reward far more skill points early on as well as some pretty decent gear.

Yeah, I learned that lesson myself when I started (previous expansion). I was getting my ass handed to me by some of the bosses, so I went off to do the main and faction quests, and man, did that make a difference.

    EP: Mornhold, Deshann
    AD: Elden Root, Grahtwood
DC: Wayrest (province escapes me atm, lower left hand side of the map somewhere)

Once you zone, you'll be approached by an npc for the main quest. Faction will open up when you find the quest giver in town.

There should be a boat captain or possibly a caravan around who will offer to take you to your faction.

Edit: I don't think the boat takes you right to the main city. It will drop you off in in your faction. Just start questing and you'll be led to it.

Also, ESO has a lot of famous actors playing the voice acting.

You will meet Caldwell during main quest line....and the actor for him is perfect :)

Very very good advice. I did the same thing when I main switched to warden with Morrowind.

Also, don't forget to take your time and explore. There are a LOT of little side quests, discoveries and lore to find.

Caldwell is the BEST EVER. Followed directly by Uncle Sheo.

Yep. ESO has some really cool little stories. The Memory Stone quest was absolutely beautiful.

    You know, people are funny.

They come to the OF complaining and asking for things because they are having a miserable time.

Then someone presents a rational argument about why complaining is a complete waste of time....

And 5 more people make posts asking for the same changes.

God forbid they consider that doing something else is even choice they have.

And yet, they go on paying and playing, enabling and inentivizing the exact behavior they are complaining about.

Classical economics does a good job of describing how people should make decisions, but any economist who tells you consumers are rational utility optimizers is as delusional as these posters.

    Note:

I should differentiate my comments above from the bug warriors and giving feedback.

Those things are obviously useful. It's the complaining and appeals for changes that will not happen that perplex me.

I'm actually glad to see people still fighting for the game. I like that they aren't letting things stop them, even if the environment isn't a receptive one. Just because a change may not happen doesn't mean it isn't worth bringing up...they aren't letting the unwillingness/jadedness/whatever of the dev team and the community stop them from trying.

It's hard to give up on years of history, enjoyment, and investment in something, no matter what it is. Norrath is a special place, and it's meant a lot to a lot of people...it hurts to see some bad decisions and lack of user/dev rapport tarnish that. No matter how we may feel about it ourselves, it's good to see someone caring enough to make the effort.

I hope they keep tilting at those windmills.

    Perhaps....

As I mentioned, feedback is good (bugs, stupid design decisions, satisfaction, etc).

For myself, where it crosses over into ludicrousness is when people fail to recognize or accept the organizational, philosophical, and cultural structures driving the bus, and start repeatedly demanding things that are in complete conflict with those structures.

It boils down to three simple questions:

    1. Am I having fun?
    2. If not, is it likely things will get better?
    3. If not, are there other things I can do with my time, energy, and money that are in better alignment with my desire to have fun?

Edit: Not trying to be super judgie or hard on these people, but at some point, you gotta accept things, make different decisions and stop enabling behavior that works counter to your peferences.

I hear you, but I also recognize that some things are more important to others than to me. It's not for me to judge those who are still invested in the game, and I don't think it's fair to expect others to give up just because someone else has moved on.

If people find something still worth fighting for, good for them. Because you (the general "you", not a specific person) have accepted that the game no longer holds an appeal doesn't make it right or fair to look down upon others who still hold an attachment.

I often get teased for being an optimist, but I do work hard to counter my cynicism and frustration. It's hard, not going to lie, especially when the dev/player relationship has degraded so far, but I won't let that disappointment allow me to scoff at people who remain more invested.

I think I'm somewhere in the middle. I don't believe The Team is going to suddenly switch direction with fundamental changes that they've made (even if 99.9% of their customers hate it). BUT. I do expect that content they DO deliver, however small, should be of good quality at reasonable cost. And I'll continue to tell them so until they close it down or kick me out, because while I don't currently play, Norrath was my home world for almost 18 years, so neener.

And I might boggle a bit, or disagree with you sometimes (and Gillymann as well), I appreciate both viewpoints. I think both of you offer valuable insight.
