<span >Per the welcome post (and just plain context from some conversations with Feldon), there's some way to get details about the use of your service id, logging of errors, etc.  I sent in the email a while ago and it's not complaining when I use the Service ID I chose.  I'd like to see my usage and any issues I may be creating.

I only found the below blurb, can anyone post more details?  (or point me to where I blindly missed it..)

    2. service ID

      [extension of the URL pattern]

       a. how to obtain a service ID

        [describe registration process]

       b. information associated with a service ID

[describe service admin site, its use and policies]

       c. how service ID is used

        - tracking of requests

        - notifications (change, error)

        - access to logs

        - activity reports

        - access entitlement

With our service ID, we get email messages sent to us when an error occurs.

As for details about usage, logging, etc. those were all things that they planned to add, but as far as I know, it's still either in the wishlist or planning stage.  I believe they have that sort of data internally but haven't exposed it to users at this point.

I guess I have a pretty noob question about this as well. The only instructions I read (and followed) was:

<span ><span style="font-size: xx-small;">To become a developer, send an email to [url="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected][/url] with your handle for this forum.

<span >I did that and I have access to this forum now... but what is my service ID?  I figured they would send an email back with a random string to use.  It's not my forum handle, is it?

    no random strings...

You send them the string you wish to use, the website url (or app name if not a website i guess), and an email address.

Yeah, apparently I had an email response when I got home tonight asking what I wanted the ID to be.  Just so I could be embarrassed about having had asked here.  (Though I did wait 4 days after having access)

What's funny is when we get error messages e-mailed to us from people using our serviceID. ;)

    Yes, that sounds... hilarious?  <img src="/station/images/smilies/136dd33cba83140c7ce38db096d05aed.gif" border="0" />

What's the point of forging someone's Service ID, though?  I still never grasped what "more capabilities" means when you get one.  Seemed like if you didn't have one, you'd be better off using none.

I still have yet to get a response on my email from November or again yesterday.  I'm still using mine, just don't know if it's legit or not.

I doubt it's someone forging our service id on purpose.  I think it's more likely someone poking around with our site, doing a view source, seeing what the URL looks like that points to icons (which includes our service id), then stabbing in the dark trying to make something work.  Since the URL they started with included our service id, they don't realize they can remove it and still have it work.

But it could be something else I guess.

Yeah it wasn't anything malicious that I could see. It was just funny to keep getting these e-mails of different URLs they were trying. ;)

    Hi guys,

Lots of questions about service IDs lately.  Currenly we are using registered developer's forums handles as their default service ID.

It seems that you can access all the JSON data without having to use the service-id.  What is the point of it then?  Are you guys eventually going to require people to go through a signup process to receive a service-id in order for SOE to control/throttle the api requests for each user?

I imagine they will eventually require a service ID. The ability to cut off people who are abusing the service seems very important.

Yup, eventually we will have a sign up process.
