The Daybreak Game Company will be acquired by EG7 Global, following a deal announced earlier today that's worth $300 million (cash and debt-free). EG7 had just acquired Piranha Games, developer of MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries and MechWarrior Online, for $24 million.

Jason Epstein, Executive Chairman of Daybreak, said:

On behalf of the Daybreak team and all of our players, we are elated to be joining the EG7 family. The combined companies are strategically positioned to expand Daybreak’s unique and iconic portfolio of live games and will help amplify our passion for making great games for our awesome communities. I look forward to working closely with the team at EG7 to continue to deliver incredible experiences for our players around the world.

Ji Ham, CEO of Daybreak, added:

Daybreak Games has an incredible legacy, an impressive portfolio of game franchises and the most incredible community of players combined with EG7, we are better positioned to expand on those amazing IPs, grow its development teams and player communities and fund exciting future games.

Robin Flodin, CEO and Co-founder of EG7, stated:

We are thrilled to be welcoming Daybreak into the EG7 family today. Daybreak is a company that I have the utmost admiration for, not only for their games but the teams behind those games and services. Together we have bold and exciting plans for the future and I look forward to making those dreams a reality for gamers all over the world.

Interesting that it hasn't hit the forums yet, nor does there appear to be any follow up on DW posting the release date otherwise I might be inclined to think they were trying to bury one piece of news under the other ....

If I post on the forums with an alt and that's my first post, I bet I'll get banned.

Anyone that bought the $300 lifetime subscription is looking like a genius now!! The game will be around for awhile now. Great deal for those that play and paid the $300. I wasn't going to take that gamble. I thought for sure the game would have been shut down by now.

I still play the game but the Beta show the current expac is very very bad. Just like the last one. No way it's going to be ready in two weeks. They will just shove it out the door undone. I can't believe someone paid $300 million for the company. Doesn't seem like they have that type of value given the quality of their products.

Iirc, DBG bought the portfolio from SOE for $400MM (?), and that was before the LOTRO, DDO, and that other recent acquisition.

If that number is correct, Epstein took a sizeable haircut on the deal.

I would not rule out the new owner doing some pruning. It could very well be the actual sale was for DCUO, EQ1, LOTRO, and DDO.

    Interested to see what happens.

    Additional info from EG7

I absolutely do not believe the 178 million users even across all titles.

It is a Swedish company listed on the stock market. A quick check of their board members tells me it is a mixture of people with background in gambling, finance and game companies.

Here is info about the chairman of the board (need google translate):
    https://mrkoll.se/person/Alexander-...asqqkuerAsqqkcYfrDYuqcYfrkyqRaQdYQakyqRaQuerA

The Swedish press-release have some more info (google translate if you want to read it):
KÖPER UTVECKLAREN DAYBREAK, AVSER TA IN KAPITAL | Placera

    - Jason Epstein will own 10% of EG7 as a part of the purchase, rest of DBG owners will split 3% ownership.

From what I read on an article from 14 of oktober this year they recently had some cash flow issues so they released more shares to get some more cash into the company. (Not sure if this is the correct English term for it, but translate says "new issue of shares").

Swedish Investment forums that checked into the deal think that 300usd for DBG is extremely over priced since none of their titles have a huge playerbase or any new IPs.

The company own another gaming company called toadman interactive, also swedish based.

Thats all I have for now.

Edit: Before anyone say I am doxxing the chairman of the board, Sweden have a very open society and his information can easily be found my googling his name.

    "Reactivation".

Holy crap, they're counting anyone who ever subbed, even if they walked away later, aren't they...

Also, what is it with SOEbreak and companies with 7 in their name?

I still don't believe that number but after I posted that I was having a smoke and thought, "I bet they're counting every single user ever across all years and platforms even ones that no longer exist."

Factor in alt accounts and it probably works.

178 million registered users doesn't really sound that impressive if you're "only" pulling in 77 million in revenue. Probably why they bothered with the whole "marketing and reactivation" line, presumably ignoring the fact that probably half the email addresses they have on file no longer exist.

I can only hope this is a positive move for the EQ franchise, but as always I'm skeptical.

Perhaps the new owner will do something new with the eq ip. Of course, even if they announced something like that tomorrow, it'd be 5 years out.

    Edit:
I know, I know. Rainbow emotes with a fish or two.

I'd suggest the critical term there is 'registered'. 'Registered' != paying OR playing customer. Is there even any way to actually delete an account?

Yeah, I interpret that number as "registered accounts". Hell, when I came back in 2010 or so, I started a new acct because my old email was trashed, and I couldn't remember my log-in info for the game.

Pretty sure "active accounts" vs. "registered accounts" are light years apart.
