Holy crap.. if it wasn't for your actual use of words, and sentence structure, I would swear you are just Holly trolling here.

Notice how I put studio leadership first?

Some people may or may not like his/her boss or their lieutenants. Just like any other workplace. So you move on (after you tried your best).

You ascribe corporate organization and disciplined leadership where none exists. It is clear that you haven't the foggiest idea about the inner workings of this company. SOE/Daybreak is and has always been barely controlled chaos.

I am not going down that rabbit hole. It would be speculation (and my point about Darkpaw changes is speculation).

This is where and why you continue to fail. There are people on these forums that have/have had first hand knowledge, contact with former and current employees, or were employees themselves. It's not pure speculation on their part, it's observation and commentary.

Whereas with every post you make, you drive home the point that you have none of these insights.

EDIT: This observation is meant to be helpful, not derogatory.

Benito talks about employees in the abstract as if the studio could just sub in someone else. EQ2 is made with 20 year old tools that each person has mastered well enough to keep the game from flying apart at the seams. There is just enough time each year to get the content done. In a typical corporation, there would be cross-team training and making sure that multiple employees are able to do each job. Specialized employees is a massive liability.

Pontificating about corporate structures and employee turnover like this is an episode of Squawk Box on CNBC just doesn't apply here.

I didn’t say on what grounds a generic employee may leave a firm. People leave companies not because of abusive leadership but because of a lack of leadership as well.

Even with sources, it’s often a different experience being on the inside than it is on the outside. (Lots of rumors about Steve Jobs but effusive praise from his employees at Apple).

That’s why they would need to simplify the system. You would teach the successor with a newer or easier template/clean slate. A new employee (or say an EQ1 dev) probably would not be able to handle the tangle of code and systems unless put in a digestible state.

UPDATE: Please seen Endymion's post below for corrected information.

They hired a tools programmer to modernize the game development tools. Shortly thereafter, EQ2's dream team of Greg, Dave, and Nandy got transferred to head up EQNext/Landmark. Suddenly the tools programmer was EQ2's ONLY programmer. Things coasted along like that for a while. We got Dave back, but we never had more than 2 at any one time after that. Major projects like transitioning EQ2 from Oracle (which was costing a $500k license per year) to EnterpriseDB and transitioning EQ from flat file to database took up the bulk of the development resources during those times.

Right now, I think EQ2 has 2 shared programmers. Jen Chan being the lead. I'd have to check the latest expansion credits to verify this. When in doubt, check the credits.

And whose fault if the company is screwed up? Does it matter? Usually the actual workers get the blame. Not the real guilty parties.

I'm attributing this to the current conspiracy theory that they really are trying to destroy the crafting game and they're now moving down the levels to break the bits that have previously worked fine. What other explanation makes as much sense?

Its a tax write off for the parent company and they need to lose more customers to increase the loss for tax reasons.

Dunno what Caith's career plans are. I suspect however that if he left, he'd give absolutely zero craps about what his replacement had to work with.

Kander, Gninja, Chrol - they'd presumably still be there.

    There's only 4 designers.

Benito, please quit textually molesting my first, and only true love and stop talking about EQ1. They have forums. I'm trying to discuss my side chick.

Perusing the OF.....this harvestables business (well along with the food/drink bug, etc) has finally put one of my pet peeves about this team out front: QOL(design team) > QOL(customers).

I've been bitching about this since Georgeson, but with Kander et al it's been even more glaring.

Glad to see folks calling them out on it.

No doubt staffing constraints are a big part of the problem. Still, this game is expensive for the quality of the product.

I still maintain DBG is working a market harvesting strategy, but if Longdale really wants to keep this title alive, she better figure out a way to deliver quality, even if that means cutting bait on stuff she can't staff adequately.

It feels like this ts stuff is waking people up.

The purchase of SOE was in 2015, not 2017.

    :'(

There was Zoltaroth, Jamiss and myself when I started, then Zoltaroth transferred to EQ Next. At some point Dave came back, and Bunji also started transitioning from build engineer to a developer as well, so 3.5 programmers?

(Also, that doesn't include Brian [can't remember his last name] who was on-board for a while to upgrade the graphics for AoM + implemented Aerakyn for ToV, among other things.)

Didn't have to wait long, they're broken.

But don't worry, they'll be 'fixed' next hotfix.

What exactly is Test used for these days?
