c:join, Can this really be used to do what c:resolve can?

The API documentation states that:

I have found it difficult to practically prove this statement so far, well at least such that i couldn't be bothered attempting it anymore as it was wasting too much time... For example, in a query that i am doing I want to join the 'Outfit' table to get the members. You can use the resolve on member or member_character to get the members but whenever i want to use a join i find that the field I need is in the resolve, which then makes it useless to me.

I may be missing something obvious but perhaps some join examples that achieve what the resolve can would be beneficial.
