I guess with Kander and Caith I see them like the manager in the movie Moneyball, “I’m running this team in a way I can explain in a job interview next year”. Except they expected the game to die years ago and they’re too chicken or too guilty to just leave and have it really die. Kander wants to be able to say he kept it profitable by only implementing things that are monetized either directly or indirectly. Caith tries to act like he lives in a world of complicated systems and gameplay loops? But it’s just garbage.

I think what made both everquest games work was items and immersion. Items need to have personality and be something the playerbase knows and worships in a way. obviously the first pass of the itemization script murdered that forever. And the immersion that comes with that, and people’s memories and fondness of items. To me Immersion starts to die with gimmicky instances that are also a straight line and only exist for you to grind currency. And the type of quests that really took hold around kunark. Disposable garbage, except for a couple. Immersion to me is all the shattered lands quests that are terrible, time consuming and obtuse, but from an immersion perspective (as opposed to I guess, a “theme park” one) they felt special. But I mean, the time is way passed, and people have changed.

Heh. Remember the Pet Rock from Sebilis? Stupid little treasured item non-combat pet. Literally a rock that rolled around after you. Didn't do a dang thing mechanically but fun and possibly the coolest thing I pulled outta that joint.

When was the last time some random side item like that was on the loot tables?

Says it all. Game has no soul now. Dead game running.

EQ2 in current state is more like an online casion, without the need of a gambling license.
The game is nothing more than an animator to go into casino.

Kander and Caith are acting like (very bad) entertainer in this casino.

That's one of the few reasons why I still play EQ1, the neat items you can get. I love going on treasure hunts. Also, Moneyball is an amazingly great movie. I just watched it for the 1st time like 3 months ago.
