EQ2U Funding and Such

Does it make sense, to publish eq2u source on github, to reach some other developers?
Or are there maybe copyright issues?

It would if Dethdlr and I were walking away from the site and felt like donating all our work.

We have daily stats of EQ2U usage, but the database is now so big that I have to download it to do that kind of lookup.

So it took like an hour and a half but I'm not afraid to share numbers about our site. These are character lookup numbers for EQ2U. These are not uniques (lookup a char 10 times and you get counted 10 times).

Update: I've removed the numbers and will post new numbers below that exclude Bing, Yandex, Google, Dotbot, MSNbot, and all the other bots and crawlers which were making up 70-75% of the numbers.

It was bothering me that we were logging bots and that they made up nearly 3/4 of that DB table, so I've added a blocker so they won't get added, and have gone through the DB and removed all the bot entries. The table was 8.8GB. Now it's 2.3GB. I guess now I have to recount...

    Wow.

The level drops from 2015 to 2018....

    And a huge decrease 2017 - 2018.

Settling around 100k look-ups/month., so 3.4k-ish/day (1,000 of those are probably Mermut).

Be interesting to see what the Nov/Dec/Jan numbers look like as people investigate gear, shinies, etc

Another takeaway for me is, even in 2014, 2015, the number of total look-ups is not exactly impressive when you consider that EVERYBODY uses eq2u. One look-up/week seems like a reasonably conservative guesstimated average.

When I look at EQ2U numbers, specifically the number of people who are logged in (with a cookie) and using the site on a regular basis, the numbers aren't huge. It's really going to come down to how many people use the site on a daily basis without logging in who would a) login and b) pay a small subscription fee if presented the chance. If that number is big enough, then a subscription could work.

A few folks (including the one who got me into EQ2 and now plays ESO) think I should set a number of character views per day or month and then require a subscription after that level. I don't like the idea of taking away functionality plus it would be a game of whack-a-mole in setting cookies, javascript, IP address tracking, etc. I'd rather add things that are optional. We'll see.

I don't recall ever bothering to log-in to eq2u, because I don't recall ever botheting to set up an eq2u account.

No matter what the offer is, you're always going to people who try and succeed in gaming it. Requiring people to log-in to view any of the content would be the most efficient. Yes, some people will create numerous accounts to avoid paying even a tiny subscription, but, they'll be a tiny percentage.

I realize the idea of setting up a general paywall for heavier consumers of your content is discomforting to you, yet, I'm inclined to believe most of us would not fault you for doing it, and be grateful that you haven't simply chosen to shut the database down.

As you know, I'm in the camp of the "x # of free views or subscribe" camp.

Lots of reasons for this, not the least of which is simplicity and also fairness to everyone.

as a frequent/heavy customer i see no problem to pay a (reasonnable) subscription fee (especially if it open additionnal content like mercenary,familiar,etc..). as we say in france " toute peine merite salaire" .And i thank you for all the work you have put in eq2u.

If Feldon puts a subscription on his site, whats stopping people from just using dragonsarmory? (Sorry for advertising, but thats a thing to consider)

Dragons Armory gives you a ton of statistical information and some guidance about your equipment choices, AA choices, and spells.

EQ2U gives you a comprehensive wide angle lense on everything there is to know about your character, including Achievements, Recipes, Item Discoveries, Skills, Factions, Ascension and more as well as browsing Items, Guilds, Recipes, Latest Discoveries, and Collections.

DA provides us with drop information as well.

Lots of folks use both - they each provide different information.

Also, the argument is a bit of a strawman, imo.

Eq2u is now running in the red. So, Feldon is presented with a choice: (a) shut the site down, or (b) adopt a new way to fund it. To expect anything else is unreasonable.

Admittedly, he's far more generous than I would be. There are more costs than simply the fixed costs of keeping the site up, because every hour he spends administering eq2u is an hour sacrificed to work on other things, which might include other revenue generating activities/projects.

Just about everything on earth can be replaced. Time cannot.

Feldon actually enjoys a great deal of rationing power with this database, but he's clearly not interested in leveraging it the way he could.

And well, if someone, at this point in the game comes along and produces a better, cheaper database?

Well then, everyone would be better of, including Feldon :)

Honestly, I would gladly contribute, were I still even slightly interested in EQ2, or anything by DBG. As it is, I really wouldn't mind if Feldon pulled the plug on EQ2U.

Of course, if he could do something similar with other games I play, well..... there is a bit of cash in my wallet!

I tried a few times to get Trion to do an API for Rift. I talked to Brasse and was even put in touch with the devs at one point. That never happened and, for obvious reasons, never will.

All the database work for EverQuest Live to support Census has been done. Just nobody wants to do the final work to get it done. What a waste of Zoltaroth's time. :(

What game are you playing and are there any signs they might do an API?

I spent like 40 70 hours writing documentation about the Census API, about how the API works, and specifically how all the EQ2 data can be accessed and to understand the formats. I always wondered... am I kicking the door open to a competitor?

You've been above and beyond for this game, whether the devs--or we--deserve it or no. I'd pay a sub gladly for the service personally.

Right now Feldon, SWTOR, and LOTRO mostly.... DBG hasn't done anything negative in LOTRO, yet... but they really aren't involved in the game itself.
