Something I thought I'd never say...I miss Landmark

I've been very sporadically playing LOTRO and GW2, but I'm finding I'm kind of not interested in MMORPGs lately, and the newer ones don't interest me at all (too twitchy or weird controls). I kept searching for a building game in an MMO setting (not single player, nor survival oriented, nor "multiplayer" where you are on someone's private server). There are so few out there at all and the ones that are there typically fall into one of those caveats I mentioned and/or pvp/battle royale. I finally realized I'm looking for Landmark!

I had stopped playing Landmark before they pulled the plug because of their continued wipes of our progress after saying they wouldn't wipe. But if that game had ever made it live, without any more wipes, I would have kept playing.

Yes I've played Minecraft and of this genre it's probably still my favorite even though I haven't played it in a long time. It has that issue of being on a private server and also I'm not a fan of the graphics. There are a few games that look interesting like Raft and Among Trees, but they have some of those same limitations (not MMO and survival mechanics).

Sims doesn't interest me just because of the genre and the "taking care" of your sims aspects. I just want an open world MMO where I can harvest and build and fighting monsters is fine too. But I don't want to constantly be starving or running out of oxygen (space based games) etc, etc. I want to be creative and build, but I also do enjoy the challenge of trying to find materials.

Mostly just posting this because it surprised me that I'm looking essentially for a game that failed due to not enough interest and/or poor management (heavy on the later I think). But of course if you have suggestions I'm all ears!

Starbound might be interesting. It suffers from the private server part, but the graphics are better than minecraft (in my opinion).

I was going to suggest Subnautica, but that is survival oriented as well. Seen some amazing underwater bases people built on youtube.

I actually like ARK (private server, official servers are ^&**%) for that reason. I can build and dino-ranch to my heart's content. (PVE only for me)

Minecraft of course. I've been playing with modpacks for 1.16.2 for the heck of it but vanilla is good too.

Fiddling with SWG Legends. I missed out on so much in that game...but its age shows. Badly.

The biggest problem with any sandbox is the jerks kicking sand in your face. Hard to balance the builders and gankers.

I've just been playing vanilla Minecraft (sort of - sometimes I use Worldedit) by myself. I've actually been messing around with the same world for around two years now. For what I'm doing other people would just get in the way, though I do see the appeal.

Anyway Landmark had a lot of potential but they really should've released it as a game instead of trying to market it as some weird EQ3 tool like they did. I feel like the marketing killed it before it ever really had a chance.

Well, that and getting the scripting to work with the overly ambitious attempt at voxels while still running acceptably on most machines at the time.

What the company did to the Landmark customers, though I do believe a lot of them should have known better by the time it all came to a head, is one of the things I will not be able to forgive them for.

If you're playing minecraft, try it with shaders on. They make the game look so much nicer to play.

What I find funny..... was working on my dual-boot rig earlier today, and forgot that Firefox wasn't set to auto-sync on the Linux side. Otherwise, I wouldn't have noticed that the troll-of-unusual-ineptitude brought up Landmark on the OF.

They must really love it here to visit so often, that they feel the need to immediately show how current and edgy they are by crossposting recent topics on the OF, lmfao!

Just in case anyone is looking for something similar, I've started playing No Man's Sky and so far so good. It still has survival mechanics but they aren't too stressful once you get out of "beginner mode" (you craft upgrades to your gear). Also it's on Steam's servers so no private server issue and it's got building. It's spaced themed which I'm not wild about but it's still fun enough. It's on sale 1/2 price on Steam right now for $30. It's normally $60. I will say IMO it's not worth $60, but $30 is fine. Oh and it does support multiplayer and also people can join your game. It's not exactly MMO, but it's closer to what I was looking for. Still would love a landmark like game though.

And it has periodic big updates, just had one last week. I've enjoyed it so far myself.

Now I've found a game in this genre I like even more than No Man's Sky. Raft - it's on Steam in early access but it's a fully developed game. Both the genre and the controls are more my speed. You're basically on a raft trying to survive but you can explore, gather stuff and build, build, build your raft! And there are multiple game modes including a creative mode that is building only. I'm doing "peaceful" mode which still has thirst and hunger, but the wildlife does not attack. Also looks like they are about to come out with a pretty major update. I paid $19.99 and so far I can't stop playing it. Also it supports multiplayer so my husband and I can play on the same raft which is fun.

Feldon, sorry this has gone off the rails and does not fit where I posted it, feel free to move it to the Coffee House. I just wanted to share what I've found in case it helps others searching!

Thanks for the recommendation Zhaanish! I still play Fallout 4 for the same reasons you listed above. I love that kind of versatility in a game.

Should give Deep Rock Galactic a try. It's a co-op game but you can play it solo. It's how I play. You get an AI to help you, Bosco and he is amazing.

You mine for ores in a cave area and fight bugs while doing so while completing the maps objective like mining, escort, extraction and so forth. It's an awesome game. I picked it up on sale on steam a month ago and I can't stop playing it. It's kind of like Landmark except you don't build anything. Definitely worth checking out.
